Summary
This article helps users fix microphone issues in Webex when others cannot hear them. It provides step-by-step instructions for checking mute status, selecting the correct input, and adjusting Windows 11 microphone settings.
Before You Begin
This article applies to Windows 11 devices only.
No administrative access is required to follow these steps.
If you're using a headset, plug it in before opening Webex.
Instructions
Step 1 – Make sure you are not muted in Webex
-
During a meeting, look for the microphone icon in the Webex toolbar.
-
If the icon is red with a line through it, you're muted. Click the icon to unmute yourself.
-
If your audio still doesn't work, continue with the steps below.
Step 2 – Select the correct microphone in Webex
-
In the meeting window, click the small arrow next to the microphone icon.
-
From the list of available devices, choose the correct microphone:
-
If you’re using a headset, select it by name.
-
If you’re using your built-in laptop mic, choose Internal Microphone or Built-in Microphone.
-
Make sure your laptop lid is open if using the internal microphone.
Step 3 – Test your microphone in Webex
-
Before joining a meeting, Webex shows a preview window with audio options.
-
Click Test next to the microphone setting.
-
Speak into the mic — you should see movement in the input level bar.
-
If there’s no response, continue to the next step.
Step 4 – Restart Webex
-
Completely exit Webex by right-clicking the icon in the system tray and choosing Quit.
-
Reopen Webex and rejoin the meeting.
-
Test the microphone again.
Step 5 – Allow microphone access in Windows 11
-
Open the Start menu and select Settings.
-
Go to Privacy & security > Microphone.
-
Ensure Microphone access is turned On.
-
Make sure Let apps access your microphone is also On.
-
Scroll down and confirm that Webex is enabled in the app list.
Step 6 – Restart your computer
-
Sometimes a full reboot is needed to reset audio devices and resolve the issue.
Additional Notes
These steps resolve most common microphone issues in Webex.
If your mic works in other apps but not in Webex, it is likely a settings issue in Webex itself.
Avoid running multiple communication apps (e.g., Teams, Zoom) at the same time — they can interfere with microphone access.
Suggestions for IT Staff
-
Open Sound Settings in Windows and test the microphone input level directly.
-
Verify that the mic appears in Device Manager > Audio inputs and outputs.
-
Try a known working headset or USB mic.
-
Check for outdated or missing audio drivers.
-
Look for conflicting software that may be blocking the mic (e.g., security tools, audio managers).
-
Test mic functionality in other apps like Sound Recorder or Microsoft Teams.
